Welcome to Island Thunder's May 12th U-14 tournament. Here are the answers to those frequently-asked questions...
Tournament Rules
Tournemt rules will be discussed at the coaches' meeting at 8:30am. Matches consist of 2 games to 25, with a cap of 27. For the first match at 9:00am, 1 plays 3 with 4 reffing. The out-of-area teams seeded 2nd have a bye to allow for additional travel time. For tournament play, the top 2 teams in each pool will advance to the Gold Division and the 2 remaining teams go to Silver Playoffs.
Driving Instructions to Mercer Island High School (9100 SE 42nd)
From either direction on I-5 or I-405, get onto I-90. Take the Island Crest Way exit. Drive south on Island Crest Way until you get to the stop light at the top of the hill. Turn left at the light, which is SE 40th Street. Go two blocks to the stop sign at 86th Avenue SE and turn right. You will cross over two speed bumps and pass the District Administration offices on your left. At the stop sign at SE 42nd, turn left. The high school is on your left near the top of the hill. After you enter the driveway, make an immediate right turn toward the main building. Park anywhere in that lot. The gym is down the steps to the left of the main entrance, just past the amphitheater.
If you get lost, please call Marcia Dare (206-459-8618) or Clay Wood (206-366-5732), and we'll try to rescue you.
Other Important Info
1. Doors open at 8:00am; the coaches' meeting is at 8:30am; and play begins at 9:00am sharp.
2. Teams will be assigned a spot in the back hallway near the locker rooms (which will be closed). There is no need to rush to be there early to pick a spot. It will already be done for you. All you have to do is find your sign.
3. There is a water only policy in both gyms.
4. The bathrooms are located in the Upper Commons area beside the Auditorium.
5. Tell fans (otherwise known as parents) to not bother bringing chairs. The bleachers will be open and chairs will be provided in the back gym. A stadium cushion might be a good thing, though.
Food & Fun
We will have a fully-stocked concession stand serving good, hot, healthy food. OK, we admit it, there will be unhealthy stuff, too. We'll be serving pizza, Caesar salad, chicken Caesar wraps, bagels and cream cheese, macaroni & cheese, pretzel rolls, muffins, homemade cookies, fruit, yogurt, candy, popcorn, chips, and drinks. If you're lucky and I find the time, I'll have homemade soup available.
Speaking of food, your teams are welcome to bring their own food, but we no longer can allow food tables in the back hallway.
Besides concession items, we have lots of things the girls can spend money on: short and long-sleeved t-shirts, low rise spandex, low-rise sweatpants, sweatshirts, kneepads, embroidered blankets, and other cool non-volleyball girl stuff. All at really reasonable prices.
Parents, coaches, and players can test their knowledge of volleyball in a special crossword puzzle and can even buy a chance to win a wonderful raffle basket. We do try to have fun here on Mercer Island. And don't forget that Saturday is St. Patrick's Day. Look for the pot of gold on your way out!
Please travel safely, and we look forward to seeing you on Saturday morning.
